The Player, Robert Altman’s sort-of murder mystery, is probably the ultimate hollywood satire – at least in terms of who he got to turn up. The cast is completely ridiculous, lending a ‘spot the superstar in the background’ air to proceedings. Deeply meta throughout. With an infamously complicated and celebrated opening shot.
